Week 3 Loves
Quarterback
Russell Wilson (Seahawks)- I know this one is not a sneaky, under the radar pick, but it’s just how it is. Wilson has been on a tear this season, and I do not see the Cowboys defense slowing him down. Matt Ryan looked back to his MVP form against the Cowboys last week, and I think Wilson is immensely better. Not only are the Cowboys the 27th team against opposing quarterbacks, but they are also the 28th against opposing wide receivers. Because of this, I see Wilson having a monster day against “America’s Team.”
Running Back
Jonathan Taylor (Colts)- Since the injury to Marlon Mack in week one, Taylor has looked very good as the lead back in Indy. Taylor’s skillset allowed him to jump Nyheim Hines for this spot, even with Hines having more experience. Last week the Jets played the 49ers, and could not stop the run. Mostert was off to a good day before his injury, with his long 80 yard touchdown within seconds of the game, being the majority of his points. After Mostert was side lined, Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon took over with McKinnon providing more with his touches. Now Taylor is a better back than any of the 49ers backs, and I expect him to take full advantage of the Jets defense.
Wide Receiver
Terry McLaurin (Washington Football Team)- Until McLaurin completely lays an egg, he must be a starter on your teams. In an unfavorable match up last week McLaurin was able to catch 7 of 10 targets, for 125 yards and a touchdown. This week McLaurin gets the Browns, who made rookie Joe Burrow and receiver Tyler Boyd look like a dynamic duo. McLaurin is an emerging top wide receiver in the league, and he already has the eye of quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Although a lot of the passing yards the Browns gave up were due to the Bengals being down, I think the Washington Football Team might have to play a little catchup in this game as well. Look for McLaurin to have a big day against this Browns defense.
Tight End
Tyler Higbee (Rams)- Higbee has been a consistent contributor for the LA Rams this season. Higbee started to come on at the end of last season, and with his most recent showing against the Eagles Higbee should be a starter on your rosters. Higbee caught all 5 of his targets along with 3 touchdowns last week and he should be primed for another good showing. The Bills have been burned by good tight ends, as was seen last week with Mike Gesiki catching 8 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. The Rams have been looking for Higbee when they get inside the redzone, which will provide multiple opportunities this week.
DST
Colts- Last week the colts were able to shut down the Vikings by limiting Dalvin Cook impact on the game, and forcing Kirk Cousins to throw, which did not work well. This week the Colts have the Jets, who have less talent at all positions than the Vikings. Although the Colts have sustained heavy injuries on defense, I still look for them to feast on the Jets offense.
Week 3 Hates
Quarterback
Deshaun Watson (Texans)- Watson has to go up against the Steelers defense this week led by T.J. Watt. Watson is the most sacked quarterback this season, being taken down 10 times. With the lack of weapons for the Texans I do not think this is a good matchup to start Watson. At this point, it seems Watson is missing DeAndre Hopkins, who the Texans traded away during the offseason. Because of the uncertainty at wide receiver and the offensive line being a weak point, I don’t foresee Watson having a good day.
Running Back
Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Chiefs)- After a strong showing in his professional debut, Edwards-Helaire has cooled off. Last week against a strong Chargers defense, Edwards-Helaire only amassed 38 yards on the ground, while adding 32 yards receiving and 6 catches. This week he faces a stout Ravens defense, one that held the Texans’ running backs to 34 yards on the ground and 16 through the air. Don’t be surprised if Edwards-Helaire has a poor showing.
Wide Receiver
Cooper Kupp (Rams)- Kupp’s value in the past has come when inside the redzone. However, this year Jared Goff seems to be looking to tight end Higbee as his go to option. Although Kupp could provide some points, I do not see him having the monster weeks he used to. And currently fellow receiver Robert Woods is the better fantasy asset available on the team.
Tight End
Evan Engram (Giants)- Engram has been hot and cold this season. With Barkley done for the year, it would make sense that there would be targets available. However, teams will now be able to key on Engram, as he is the only threat left that opposing teams really need to be concerned with. Until recent free agent acquisition Devonta Freeman or the other running backs can take some of the attention away from Engram, he may be a risky play.
Sleepers
Jerick McKinnon (49ers)- If you’re a team that has been hit by the injury bug, McKinnon is a must start, especially against a Giants team that allowed the Bears to run all over them. However, if you are a player that snagged McKinnon off of the waiver wire and have a top running back then McKinnon may only be a flex play, or a benchwarmer.
Russell Gage (Falcons)- Now many wouldn’t think that a player like Gage is tied for the most receptions on the team, but he is! With Julio Jones dealing with a hamstring injury, Gage could benefit if Jones’ play time is limited. In recent weeks Matt Ryan has looked to the third year player, and Gage has delivered. Keep an eye on Gage going forward.
