Waiver Wire Adds (Roster ownership is based on Week 2 percentage in ESPN leagues)
Quarterback
Ryan Tannehill (Titans)- Over the past couple of weeks Tannehill has been a consistent contributor at the quarterback position. Week one was a close game against the Broncos. The Titans’ game script looked like the traditional ground and pound team we have seen, which leaned heavily on workhorse running back Derrick Henry. However, in both games Tannehill gained over 230 yards, and has thrown 6 touchdowns thus far. Tannehill’s consistent play makes him a strong candidate on the waiver wire. With Jimmy Garoppolo dealing with an ankle injury and most of the 49ers hurt, Tannehill seems like the better option. Rostered in 40.5% of leagues.
Jared Goff (Rams)- Week one for the Rams quarterback was not the best showing from Goff, he threw no touchdowns, and had an interception in that game. Fast forward a week and the offense looked completely different. The offense looked strong and decisive and how we all envisioned it should be with the Guru McVay calling the plays. Versus the Eagles, Goff tossed three touchdowns, all of them going to tight end Tyler Higbee. With a plethora of options in this offense, Goff should be considered if you are in need of help at quarterback. Rostered in 43.6% of leagues.
Joe Burrow (Bengals) - This may be a bit premature, but keep an eye on rookie quarterback Joe Burrow for those deeper leagues, or potentially as a deal in daily fantasy. Thursday Night’s game against the Browns showed that Burrow was the better quarterback, and he even did so with lesser weapons. I don’t expect the Bengals to be up in many if any games, and against the Browns the run game never got going. Because of these factors the Bengals should be playing catch up in almost all of their games, meaning Burrow will have to throw the ball around. Do not bank on 61 pass attempts every game, but high 40s into the 50s could be the norm. Rostered in 50.9% of leagues.
Running Backs
Devonta Freeman (Free Agent)- Just before I posted this article a notification came up on my phone. Devonta Freeman is expected to sign with the Giants. If this happens he is a must grab as he provides more upside than either Wayne Gallman or Dion Lewis. Freeman was a premier back but injuries and a contact negotiation has kept him out of football. If he is healthy and learns the system fast he could carry the burden of the offense. Rostered in 7.5% of leagues.
Darrell Henderson Jr. (Rams)- During Sunday’s game versus the Eagles rookie running back Cam Akers injured his ribs, which put him on the sideline for the remainder of the game and potentially for a couple weeks. As a result of this injury Malcom Brown, and Darrell Henderson Jr. took over responsibilities. Henderson received one more touch than Brown but provided much more. Brown ended the day with 47 yards on 11 carries, while Henderson tallied 81 yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown, and showed his ability to be used in the passing game with his 2 catches for 40 yards. If you are looking for help Henderson is the better of the options in the Rams’ offense. Rostered in 45.8% of leagues.
Mike Davis (Panthers)- With the injury to Christian McCaffrey resulting in a high ankle sprain, which will sideline him for a couple of weeks. This injury leaves a void at the running back position, with back up Mike Davis assuming the responsibilities. This could be a very short term pick up if McCaffrey’s injury doesn’t hamper him for too long, but the upside for the couple of weeks could keep your team afloat. Rostered in 2.7% of leagues.
Joshua Kelley (Chargers)- With Melvin Gordon in Denver, the Chargers needed to fill the role of power/goal line back on the team. Austin Ekler is the primary back for the Chargers, but rookie Joshua Kelley is not too far behind him. The scheme being run for the Chargers uses both backs as compliments of one another. Whereas Ekler is much more productive with his touches, the team is willing to give the young back his fair share. This addition off of the waiver wire is more of a stash as I believe Kelley’s role could increase and so could his production. If you are looking for a quick plug and play this might not be the addition you are looking for. Rostered in 39.8% of leagues.
Jerick McKinnon (49ers)- With the 49ers team just being absolutely decimated by injury there is a back currently that (fingers crossed) continues to be healthy. That back is McKinnon. McKinnon has been seeing some use, and due to the injuries on the offensive side this has greatly increased. While Mostert is sidelined with his MCL sprain, and Tevin Coleman deals with his injury, the team has turned to McKinnon. His running ability and ability to have a serious impact in the receiving game makes him a wonderful addition and one I highly suggest. Rostered in 26.6% of leagues.
Wide Receivers
Corey Davis (Titans)- In recent weeks the former first rounder seems to have found his footing in the Titans’ system. With A.J. Brown dealing with an injury and the team looking like a balanced offense, Davis is primed for continued success. Week one saw Davis catch 7 of 8 targets for 101 yards, and in week two only catching 3 of 5 targets for 36, but he did catch a touchdown. As things carry on I do think Davis should be considered as a WR2 or Flex. Rostered in 46.5% of leagues.
Michael Pittman Jr. (Colts)- With the injury bug striking the Colts’ Parr’s Campbell in week two, the team turned to rookie wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. Although Pittman didn’t have the amazing stat line, but with time and building a rapport with Philip Rivers he could become a sneaky addition. Look for Pittman to have an increased role this week as he builds off of his week two experience. Rostered in 16.9% of leagues.
Laviska Shenault Jr. (Jaguars)- The former Colorado Swiss Army knife is finding his way in the NFL. Shenault has been getting involved in the pass and run game so far these past weeks. With Shenault settling into the NFL and gaining confidence he becomes a fascinating target on the waiver wire. With his ability to gain points on designed runs and through the air there is no reason to overlook this rookie. Rostered in 18.2% of leagues.
Jerry Jeudy (Broncos)- As we have seen the injury bug, or just 2020 being one hell of a year, star receiver Courtland Sutton suffered a torn ACL and will be done for the year. However, we cannot dwell on the past or what could have been with Sutton, but we can look to the beneficiary of his absence. Rookie Jerry Jeudy should be able to slide into the starting role and be able to have an impact, not only on the team but on fantasy rosters. Jeudy was undoubtedly the best route runner in college and was the most pro-ready when he was drafted this past spring. Because of his ability to create space and the precision of his routes, Jeudy should be looked at more often in this offense. Rostered in 74% of leagues.
Tight Ends
Dalton Schultz (Cowboys)- As has been a common theme this season, injuries have created opportunities. Dalton Schultz took full advantage of his chance and had a wonderful day against the Falcons. Schultz finished the day with 9 receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown. Now, do I think this stat line is the norm for Schultz? No. Do I think he can have a solid stat line that could provide good value? Yes. I think this new system under McCarthy is more pass happy, which means that there should be more targets to go around. With the lack of top end tight ends, someone like Schultz should be added. Rostered in 1.8% of leagues.
Jonnu Smith (Titans)- Smith has been a tight end that I quite liked a lot going into this year. Towards the end of last year Smith really seemed to become a big factor for the Titans’ offense, and since the beginning of this season that hasn’t changed. Smith has caught 3 touchdowns, and has been targeted 12 times so far. Smith is a very athletic tight end and one that has the ability to turn short throws into big gains, and can certainly stretch the field vertically. If you do not have Jonnu Smith on your rosters currently, and you don’t have Kelce or Kittle or one of the other “top end” players, you are making a huge mistake. Smith needs to be an addition for those in need of tight end production. Rostered in 51.5% of leagues.
Jordan Reed (49ers)- The injury prone Reed seems to have found some youth in the 49ers offense. With Kittle still a little banged up, Reed is a quality choice for some much needed production out of the tight end position. Hopefully Reed can stay healthy in this new system and flourish, but do be cautious as he does have quite the injury history. Rostered in 9.3% of leagues.
