Week 6 Loves & Hates
Loves
QB
Kirk Cousins (Vikings)- Cousins and the Vikings play against the Falcons this week. The Falcons are ranked 32nd against opposing QBs, 24th for WRs, and 31st for TEs. With Cousins strengthening his connection with Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson I would be surprised if he had a pedestrian day. I would like to see TE Kyle Rudolph, and/or Irv Smith get more action, rather than just a couple of redzone looks. With Dalvin Cook dealing with an injury the game plan could be more pass heavy. Either way, Cousins should have a good game.
Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers)- With rookie Chase Claypool announcing himself to the league, Big Ben now has another legitimate threat at WR. If JuJu Smith-Schuster can play and Claypool continues showing why he was the Steelers top draft pick, Big Ben should be able to tear the Browns defense apart. So far this season, the Browns are ranked 24th against opposing QBs, 31st for WRs, and 27th against TEs. With Ben starting to regain arm strength and how bad the Browns are on defense, Ben has a strong chance finishing as a top 5 QB.
RB
Myles Gaskin (Dolphins) Gaskin should have a better time this week against a weak Jets team. The Jets are 28th on the year against opposing RBs. Up to this point, the Jets have allowed on average 110 yards rushing and 42 yards receiving to RBs. This game should allow for Gaskin to take center stage and be the focal point of this Dolphins offense.
David Montgomery (Bears)- A surprising player I like this week is Montgomery. Montgomery gets a Panthers defense that ranks dead last when facing RBs. On average the Panthers allow 112 yards rushing and 57 yards receiving to RBs. The Panthers have also allowed 9 total touchdowns to RBs this season. With how well the Panthers are against QBs, WRs, and TEs I would expect the Bears to focus heavily on utilizing Montgomery.
Derrick Henry (Titans)- Last week the Texans looked like a new team, following the firing of head coach/GM Bill O’Brien (BOB). They held the Jaguars to 55 yards rushing and 57 yards receiving. However, on the season the Texans are 26th against opposing RBs and have on average allowed 141 yards rushing. Henry is a better RB than James Robinson and should have a better game against the Texans.
WR
Calvin Ridley (Falcons)- The game this week against the Vikings has the makings for a shootout. With Julio Jones’ status still up in the air and both teams (Vikings and Falcons) having weak pass defenses, points should be had. Ridley is a refined route runner and has produced in all but one game this year. The Vikings corners are young and still trying to find their footing. Based on how good Ridley is, he should have a game against these corners.
Chase Claypool (Steelers)- The rookie WR looks like a more dangerous Martavis Bryant. The previous game against the Eagles was his welcome to the NFL moment, and he did not disappoint. Throughout the game Big Ben seemed to look to Claypool rather than JuJu. Even if Dionte Johnson is back in the lineup this weekend, Claypool’s performance cannot be ignored. Claypool is a bigger, faster, and stronger player with better receiving skills. With the team utilizing him on designed runs, and being targeted frequently in the passing game, I don’t see how he shouldn’t have another big game. I mean, he’s going up against the Browns who are 31st against opposing WRs. This week should be another strong performance.
TE
Evan Engram (Giants)- Okay, let's try this one again, and I mean it this time. If Engram can’t produce in this game you have to move on from him, and fast. The Washington Football team is bad against TEs, but not Falcons bad, and have allowed 341 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season so far. If the Giants focus their game plan around Engram there is no reason why he can’t have a big day.
Trey Burton (Colts)- Burton started the year on IR, but has since returned to the lineup. In last week’s game Burton was 2nd on the team in targets and with Mo Alie-Cox likely not playing, as he has not participated in practice this week, the opportunities are there. The Bengals are towards the bottom of the league when defending against TEs, as the they currently rank 21st. Burton should be able to have a productive game with the Colts running their multiple TE scheme on offense.
D/ST
Dolphins- This is an easy write up. Go look back at my waiver post from Tuesday and start the Dolphins. They’re playing the Jets, who, let’s face it, can’t have nice things.
Hates
QB
Nick Foles (Bears)- For those of you that have to start Foles, I feel bad for you. The QB situation for the Bears is not great and they get the Panthers. On the season the Panthers are 3rd against opposing QBs, 6th against WRs, and 7th for TEs. With the Panthers being that strong, I don’t see how the Bears can make Foles look good.
RB
Joe Mixon (Bengals)- Unfortunately the Bengals and Mixon drew the short end of the stick this weekend. The Colts defense has allowed on average 73 rushing and 30 receiving yards to opposing RBs. They have also only given up two total touchdowns. If you have to start Mixon just lower your expectations for this game.
WR
Amari Cooper (Cowboys)- The injury to Dak Prescott hurts all the pass catchers for the Cowboys. The Cowboys get the Cardinals this week who have been very good at defending opposing WRs, as they rank 5th this season. Add this trend with new starting QB Andy Dalton and things just don’t seem like they are going to work as intended. Going forward, until we see a strong connection or some sense of what this team was under Dak, the WRs for the Cowboys are low end starting options.
TE
Zach Ertz (Eagles)- The once fabled and sought after connection between Carson Wentz and Ertz seems like a thing of the past. Last week against the Steelers, Ertz looked out of sorts. On a route after getting bumped by a linebacker he gave up, which resulted in an interception. And throughout the game Ertz only caught 1 of the 6 passes thrown his way. With this connection not working, Wentz looked elsewhere for production and found it with WR Travis Fulgham, Greg Ward, and even rookie John Hightower. Not to mention that the Eagles get to go up against a young and super athletic defense in the Ravens. I don’t see how this matchup could end well for Ertz.
